Senior Care Providers Share Tips on How Older Adults Can Stay Positive

Dec 7, 2017 by Cindy Adkins

Positivity is important for older adults who would like to live a happy life and make the most out of their golden years. When life gets tough, a positive mindset can keep a senior physically and mentally healthy. Senior care providers in Olympia, WA, encourage older adults to do the following in order to stay positive:

Eat Healthy and Exercise

When seniors eat healthy and exercise on a regular basis, they are more likely to have positive thoughts. A senior care aide can make sure that your older loved one is consuming well-balanced, nutritious meals and engaging in physical activity at least three times each week.

Develop Relationships with Positive Individuals

Older adults should avoid contact with anyone who puts them down or surrounds them with a negative energy. By developing relationships with friends and family members who raise their spirits and spending time with these types of people often, seniors can stay positive.

Find the Positive in Negative Situations

There will be times when a certain situation hurts a senior. Whether it’s the passing of a loved one, a financial struggle, or a health issue, older adults should try to find the positive. Maybe the passing of their loved one means they are no longer suffering or it’s time to celebrate their long life or a financial struggle encourages them to land a part-time job doing something they love.

Add Positivity to Someone Else’s Life

One of the reasons senior care professionals promote volunteering to older adults is because it can give them the opportunity to add positivity to someone else’s life and remain positive themselves. Seniors can also add positivity to the lives of others by making them laugh, surprising them with a special gift or experience, or simply complimenting them.

Eating healthy and exercising, developing relationships with positive individuals, finding the positive in negative situations, and adding positivity to the lives of others can all help seniors stay positive when the going gets tough.
