Stress can take a toll on an older adult’s physical and mental wellbeing. Since most seniors are living on a fixed income, they don’t have the money to visit the spa and relax. Fortunately, there are a number of free or inexpensive ways older adults can relieve stress. In home health care providers recommend the following:
Create a Spa at Home
Older adults who enjoy the spa atmosphere can create a spa at home. They can do so by soaking in a warm bath and listening to soothing music. In home health care professionals suggest they create a homemade face mask or foot scrub and place cucumbers on their eyes.
Go for a Scenic Walk
Sometimes, nature and fresh air can boost a senior’s mood and help them forget about their stressors. Older adults should get into the habit of going on a trail and taking a scenic walk with someone they love every time they need to unwind and relax.
Older adults should take the time to write down a few things they are thankful on a day they are feeling stressed. Practicing gratitude can help them realize that while they’re life may not be perfect, it’s still pretty great.
Laughter truly is the best medicine. In home health care aides encourage older adults to call up an old friend or relative that makes them laugh, go to a comedy show, or simply watch a funny movie at home.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Seniors tend to feel more stressed out when they are lacking sleep. Therefore, they should try to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each and every evening.
Creating a spa at home, going for a scenic walk, practicing gratitude, laughing, and getting a good night’s sleep are all great ways for seniors to relieve stress without breaking the bank.
