In Home Care Tips After a Cancer Diagnosis

Nov 21, 2017 by Cindy Adkins

Every year, a number of seniors are given the unfortunate news that they have cancer. It is a difficult and devastating situation. If you are helping to provide in home care for a senior after they have received a cancer diagnosis, it can be a difficult position to be in. It is important that you are able to provide support to your loved one after they receive this diagnosis and that you are doing whatever you can to help them through this difficult time.

This is a challenging and at times unexpected responsibility that can come with caregiving. However, there are things that family in home care providers can do in order to support their loved one during this difficult time:

  • Talking with your loved one about what they want for treatment. Some seniors may not want to pursue aggressive treatments and may be more content with palliative care.
  • Being respectful of their wishes to talk about their diagnosis. Some seniors will want to talk about their cancer diagnosis, while others may want to keep it private.
  • Helping seniors stay in touch with their doctors during this difficult time. Uncertainty about cancer, side effects and outcome can cause a great deal of stress in the life of any senior, so the more they know the better.
  • Coordinating care with an in home care provider. Battling cancer in the comfort of their own home can help many seniors during this challenging period of their lives.

While no one ever wants their family member or loved one to deal with a cancer diagnosis, it is important to know what to do should your loved one ever get this troubling news. The more you can do to support them and make sure they are getting the care and attention that they need, the better off your loved one will be.
